In the perfume world, terms like natural, naturally-derived, and synthetic are often used—but rarely explained clearly. Many consumers assume “natural” means safe and “synthetic” means chemical or artificial in a negative sense. At RASAH, we believe that education is key to making better, safer, and more informed fragrance choices.
What is “Natural”?
Natural ingredients are raw materials extracted directly from nature—flowers, woods, resins, spices—using methods like steam distillation, cold pressing, or solvent extraction. Examples include rose otto, sandalwood oil, or jasmine absolute.
While natural ingredients can be beautiful and complex, they aren’t always safe. Some are phototoxic, allergenic, or unstable over time. Natural essential oils can also contain dozens (sometimes hundreds) of individual chemical components—some of which may cause skin irritation or hormone disruption, especially when not properly diluted or tested for purity.
What is “Naturally-Derived”?
Naturally-derived materials originate from a natural source (like a plant or sugar cane) but are chemically modified to isolate or create a desired molecule. An example is citronellol, which may be derived from rose or lemongrass but is often isolated and purified for consistency.
These materials are often more skin-friendly and reliable in formulations. They maintain a connection to nature but offer greater control over performance and safety.
What is “Synthetic”?
Synthetics are molecules created in a lab—some inspired by nature, others entirely new. Far from being “cheap fillers,” quality synthetics are essential tools in modern perfumery. Iconic notes like musk, ambergris, and even lily of the valleycannot be extracted naturally and are always replicated through synthetic chemistry.
Contrary to popular belief, many synthetics are more stable, hypoallergenic, and environmentally sustainable than their natural counterparts. They allow perfumers to avoid overharvesting rare plants or using animal-derived materials like civet or natural musk.
Why Natural Isn’t Always Safer—and Synthetic Isn’t the Enemy
The idea that “natural is always better” is a myth. Poison ivy is natural. So is lead. Safety depends on how an ingredient is sourced, processed, and used—not simply whether it came from a plant. Similarly, just because something is synthetic doesn’t mean it’s harmful. In fact, many synthetic aroma molecules have been extensively tested for skin safety, environmental impact, and performance.
At RASAH, we use both carefully sourced natural materials and high-quality, non-toxic synthetics to create well-balanced, luxurious fragrances. We also aim to avoid phthalates, unnecessary allergens, and known endocrine disruptors to protect your skin and wellbeing.
In Summary
- Natural = directly from nature, but not always safe or consistent
- Naturally-derived = modified from nature, more stable and safer
- Synthetic = lab-created, often sustainable and hypoallergenic
True luxury lies not in the label, but in integrity, safety, and craftsmanship. That’s what we stand for at RASAH.
